Symptoms of Proper & Improper Vaman

Vaman (Therapeutic Vomition ) –

Symptoms of proper vaman karma ( Samyak Yog)

      Removal of Primarily vitiated kapha ,followed by pitta
      After removal of vitiated doshas, episodes of  vomiting stops automatically
      Feeling of lightness in chest ,abdomen and head
      Freshness of the body
      After vaman karma, patient may feel weakness for couple of days

Symptoms of incomplete vaman karma ( Ayog)

      No expulsion  of impure doshas, only expulsion  of vaman dravyas
      Feeling of tightness in the chest & abdomen
      Heaviness in the body
      Uricaria rash, itching, fever
      In incomplete vamana, impure doshas are retained in the body. They can create many  other diseases.

Symptoms of excess vaman karma ( Atiyog)

Considering this complication ,written consent before Vaman is advisable  
      Vomiting with fresh blood or blood stained
      Symptoms of dehydration- Dryness of the mouth, excess thirst , giddiness, tachycardia etc.Even hypovolumic shock

After treatment of Vaman
      Patient’s mouth ,face ,chest ,abdominal part should be cleaned by towel ,soaked in warm water
      Person should take rest for some time.
      Stay in a room devoid of heavy breeze.

      Patient should be provided some pan .Because after vaman when patient is shifted to indoor ward ,patient may get 1 or 2 bouts of vomiting or there may be some excessive salivation & patient may want to spit

      Even some patients may get 1 or 2 times loose motions. Patient should be informed about that

      Dhumapana- Generally it is done with a specially prepared stick.( Dhuma varti or Aturvedic Cigar like Nirdosha ).Some times we can put Bajara flour on hot plate & fumes coming from it can be inhaled.In vamana, impure dosha is situated in stomach is excreted through mouth. Some impurities may remain in throat, mouth and nose. For removing of  of this remnant of kapha dosha, dhumpana is indicated.

      Mostly vairechanic dhumpana is done with manahshila, haratal (purified arsenic compounds), dhattur patra (Dhattura stramonium), Aguru (Aquilaria agallocha) etc.If above drugs are not available, Vacha powder or Pippali powder is also used. Especially in asthmatic patients pippali is used for dhoomapan.

      Follow the Sansarjana krama (Post therapeutic regimen).Immediately after vaman karma, digestive power of the patient  becomes  poor. The digestive power is restored by avoiding specific diet after completion of shodhana treatment. It is termed as sansarjana krama. In this process, firstly light, liquid diet is advised to the patient. From Liquid diet ,patient is brought to normal diet ,within a span of 5 to 8 days .For example first 2 days liquid diet like luke warm water,Laja manda, Kharjur month, Vegetable soups, Fruit juice, Medicated herbal Teas etc Then next 2 days soft & light diet like rice, Khichadi.Next 2 days Jwar or  Bajara Bhakari ,Green leafy vegetables .Then normal diet but less in amount & avoiding spicy ,oily food .

Don’ts after Vaman

      After vaman, patient become weak i.e. convalescent phase and hence avoid following things, which will vitiated Tridosha

      Excess talking, movements, suppression of natural urges, long vehicle journey, sleeping during day time, not sleeping during night. Avoidance of sansarjana krama.

      If someone wants to perform the whole panchakarmas then after vaman karma, do the sansarjan krama and then go for virechan karma. One have to do snehan, swedan again as a pretreatment for Virechan.

      If no other panchakarmas are to be performed then after sansarjana krama go for medicinal therapy which may be Rasayan (for rejuvenation) or may be shaman (therapeutic).
