or Parisheka sweda – Part 2
Requirements --
l Abhyang table – soft cushioned surface of the table
in vata prakruti & hard table in kapha prakruti.
l 2 litres of medicated oil
l 18 inches square pieces of cloth ,4 in number
l Gindi --- vessel with tubular outlet
Procedure – First healthy person or patient client is given full body massage ,better
synchrone massage . Head end of the
table is raised by 6 inches ,by placing
two 6 inches high wooden blocks beneath the two legs.2 liters of oil is heated
approximately up to 45 degree centigrade in water bath .Now for oil pouring ,the cloth piece is folded
many times to reduce Its size to approximately 3 inches by width & 2 inches
by thickness .This cloth piece is soaked in warm oil. For pouring of oil
therapist should hold this cloth between the fingers & flat of the palm
with thumb extended.While pouring the oil the thumb is held at a height of 9
inches from surface of client’s body.For pouring of oil instead of cloth small
special vessel , known as gindi having
tubular outlet may be used.Even a vessel having multiple minute pores may be used for pouring herbal decoction
As the oil is poured with one
hand on to clients body, therapist gently moves his other palm over skin following
the path of oil is poured. This simultaneous Abhyanga , prevents over heating
due to stasis of the warm oil on skin.The direction of moving palm is from
above downwards in extremities & from below upwards in the trunk.
Reusing the oil -- When oil is used for pariseka sweda it may be used for
a maximum 3 consecutive days.But in case of milk or herbal decoctions they
should be taken fresh every day.
After procedure -- Client should take rest for 15 min & then
allowed to take hot water bath. For cleaning oil from body Bengal gram powder
should be used. Soaps & Synthetic shampoos should be avoided
During course of Pariseka client should
strictly avoid following:
1. physical
exercise
2. Exposure to
sun , cold weather
3. Withholding the natural urges
4. Smoking
5. Exposure to dust, cold breeze.
6. Excessive sleeping, walking.
7. Prolonged sitting.
8. Emotional disturbances like grief & anger
9. Keeping awake at night.
10. Loud & continuous speech
11. Use of cold water for wash & bath
Duration of procedure --
Pariseka sweda is carried out
--
l In clients suffering from imbalance of vata dosha or
pitta dosha pariseka should be carried out for 72 min
l In case of kapha dosha pariseka should be carried
out for 36 min
l It may be performed for alternate day or once in 3
days.
l Depending upon severity of illness Pariseka may be
extended to 7, 14, 21 or 28 days.

Medicated liquid such as oil is
poured on the body is known as pariseka
sweda.When pariseka sweda is performed all over body known as kayaseka Or
pizichil .Instead of oil, warm herbal decoctions, medicated ghee, milk or such
other liquids may be used for applying heat to body.Kaya seka provides
simultaneous snehana and swedana.
Beneficial effects:
l Pacify vitiation of vata & other dosha.
l Improves stability as well as stamina
l Provides excellence of ojas
l Complexion of skin becomes lustrous
l Efficiency of sense organ is improved
l Reverse aging process ,i.e Antiageing Treatment
Indications:
l All
sorts of Vata disorders ,mainly Dhatukshayajanya or degenerative type
l Hemiplegia, paraplegia.
l Traumatic pain, contusion pain & stiffness of
joints.
l To facilitate normal labour pariseka sweda is
performed during the 9 month of pregnancy.

l Vata prakruti – Himasagara taila
l Pitta prkruti – Chandanadi or chandan bala lakshadi or kshira bala oil
l Kapha prakruti – Triphaladya oil
l Sama prakruti – Asana bilvadi oil
l Obstinatae skin diseases – Marichadi oil
l Neurological disorders – Mahanarayan or Mahamasha

Butter
milk is used for dhara.
·
Indications-
1. Premature graying of hair.
2. Psoriasis
3. Headache
,specially of chronic type like Migraine
4. Strengthening Immunity by increasing quality & quantity
of Oja .
5. Tingling
numbness of extremities.
6. Makes bony joints more stout
7. Burning sensation all over the body or at the foot
and palm.

Preparation of medicated butter milk (
With Amalaki)
1. Medicated Butter milk is prepared on the previous day of Shirodhara
& the decoction on the day of the dhara procedure itself.
2. First 1 liter of cow’s milk is boiled & cooled.
3. 20 ml of curd is added to it & kept overnight
for fermentation.
4. Next day morning curd is churned & we get the
butter milk.
5. Now prepare a Decoction or Kwath --
For
this 2 Kg crude or bharad Amalaki is taken & 8 lit of water is added .Boil it to
reduce it to 2 liters . Decoction is strained to get the clear liquid
Lastly
Buttermilk is added in this Decoction & this liquid is used for Shirodhara
as Medicated Buttermilk
· Preparation
of medicated butter milk ( With Musta & Amalaki)
1. Crushed tubers of Musta or Nagarmotha is taken in a
square cotton piece & tied into
pack.
2. This pack is placed in vessel of 8 Lit capacity .
3. 1.5 lit of cow’s milk & 6 lit of water is taken into this vessel.Mixture is boiled to reduce
it to remain 1.5 lit
4. Then pack of
Musta is squeezed & the decoction is
strained to another vessel
5. To this decoction 20ml of curd is added & kept
over night for fermentation
Next
morning decoction of Amalaki is prepared . For this 2 Kg crude or bharad amalaki
is taken & 8 lit of water is added
.Boil it to reduce it to 2 liters . Decoction is strained to get the clear
liquid
6. This Amalaki decoction is now mixed with already
prepared medicated butter milk & churned vigorously to extract the butter.Butter
is removed & Buttermilk is used for Shirodhara
Preparation of medicated butter milk ( With Jatamansi
& Sarpagandha )
Boil 2 Lit of Milk
.Add 25 Gm powder each of Sarpagandha & Jatamansi .Add 20 ml of curd in it
.Keep this mixture overnight for fermentation
Next day churn this
curd vigorously .Remove the butter from it .Use this medicated Buttermilk for
Shirodhara .Very good material to treat the longstanding cases of Insomnia

Shirodhara /Shiraseka
Introduction – Shirodhara is a type of Murdha Taila .Murdha means
head .Fomentation by warm oil to head is called as Murdha Taila or Shira Tarpan
.Vagbhata in Ah Hr. Sutra 22/23 has described 4 types of Murdha Taila – i)
Shirobyanga ii) Shira Seka iii) Pichu iv) Shirobasti .In all these procedures
oil is expected to retain in head region .In these procedures oil is acting on
head in increasing time from Shirobhanga to Shirobasti .So naturally they are
more beneficial in same ascending sequence
l Continuous pouring of decoction, oil or other
liquids like milk or buttermilk on
forehead & then allowing it to flow over scalp using a specialized
instrument dhara yantra is known as shiraseka, popularly known as shirodhara.
l Here pouring of oil is followed by Abhyanga ( Full
body syncrone massage for 20 minutes) ,Facial massage

Material
l 6 feet long
& 4 feet wide cotton cloth for draping the body.
l Medicated or
plain oil or other liquids like milk,buttermilk or decoction
l Cotton pads to cover eyes
l Ribbon of gauze to tie on forehead ( to avoid oil to
enter into eye)
Dhara table
l Depressed head portion to accommodate head (approximately 45cm in diameter)
l A small hole of 1 cm diameter at the centre of the
shallow depression,to drain oil
Dhara yantra
l It consists of dhara pot, coconut shell a small stick
,size of little finger, & wick prepared from the cotton wool or gauze.
l Dhara pot – unique vessel of two liter capacity
having hole of half cm diameter at the bottom of vessel
Preparation of dhara pot
l Plantain or coconut shell is cut into a round, & the diameter of
which should be lesser than that of dhara pot.
l Plantain or coconut shell is gently heated in a direct
fire to reduce its stiffness.
l The nutshell is then placed in the vessel upside
down
l Now the prepared dhara pot is mounted on a stand.
Utility of Specific Dhara Patra
l The coconut shell placed upside down prevents the solid
reaching the pore of Dhara patra & obstruction due to it.
l The wick helps in the steady stream of flow rather
than turbulent flow of liquids.
