Nasya – Classification

According to action ( Sanskrit word is Karmukata)

( Referance of Vagbhata – As Hr Sutra 20/2)

i)            Brinhana – Nourishing – It is also called as Tarpan Nasya.To control Dhatukshyajanya Vata Prakop .Degenerative pathology like senile dementia or Parkinsonism ( Deficiency of Dopamine Neurotransmitter) or Mysthenia Gravis ( Deficiency of Ach Neurotransmitter),Bell’s palsy,Dryness in nose,throat etc, Migraine  in thin female patient .Usually plain or medicated ghee is used

ii)           Shamana – Pacifying Nasya .Used in moderate Dosha Prakop or weak patients ,where Strong shodhan can not applied

iii)         Virechana – or Shodhan or Purification Nasya – It is used when Dosha Prakop is severe & patient is strong & stout .Conditions are treated like heaviness in the head ,Chronic sinusitis,Anosmia ( Loss of smell sensation) ,Thyroid or other tumor like growths

According to Dose

i)            Marsa Nasya :-- Dose is 8 to 32 drops in each nostril .It is used when Dosha prakop is moderate or severe & patient is strong & stout .Ghee or oil is used for marsha nasya treatment

ii)           Prathimarsa Nasya :-- Dose is only 2 drops in each nostril .This is very soft & gentle Nasya .Can be used as a preventive measure or Dosha prakop is mild .This can be used in weak, delicate people, in children, old people, females .It is also called as aajanma marana satmya nasya ( meaning is tolerable from birth to death) .Because there isn’t any fear of side effect as the dose is very low i.e. two drops in each nostril. Thus we can perform it in any time and at any age of person.

According to the substance used for Nasya  

i)            Avapeedaka Nasya –Avapida nasya where the paste of the drug(kalka) is squeezed into the nostril and the juice (extract) of a drug is administered through the nasal passages. This is teekshna Nasya .In this nasya type substance is used other than Sneha dravya.

Chakrapani ,critics on Charak said Avapeedak is of 2 types Shodhan & Stambhana

Types of Avapida nasya:

a)  Shodhana.-- Eg. Nasya of palandu swarasa
Indicated in  manasa vyadhi like Unmad Hysteria or ACR = Acute Conversion Reaction) , Apasmara ( Epilepsy) , Murchha, krimi ( Maggots) , Ardhavbhedakadi shiroroga ( Migraine) ,coma,poisonong

         b)Stambhan  --  Eg. Nasya of durva swarasa, cow’s milk, sugarcane juice ,concentrated sugar water ,milk
Indicated in  Nasagata Raktapitta ( Epistaxis) ,in weak patients
    
ii)           Pradhaman Nasya – This is also called as Dhmpan nasya .Pradhaman means to blow .This is only of Shodhan type. In this method dry powders (rather than oils) are used to blow into the nose with a tube attached to rubber bulb like that of attached to BP apparatus .Other wise paper roll can be used to blow the powder .

Dose is 3 pinch powder .Pradhamana Nasya is a type of virechanic nasya (cleansing nasya).Traditionally, powders such as vacha, Satala or Shikekai powders are used in this process.

Videha ,an ayurvedic scientist ,explained other time of Pradham .Take very fine powder of medicinal herb  in very thin cloth & just smell intermittently .Vacha powder or Ajwayan or Owa powder can be used in this way in running water from nose ( Cold or Pratisyaya) .This is comparatively safe method than blowing powder in to the nose

iii)         Navan Nasya ---- This is Sneha Nasya .Only Sneha or medicated sneha is used .Vacha tail will be for Shodhan or Virechan Nasya .Anu Tail will be used for Shaman Nasya & Bala Tail will be used for Bruhan Nasya

According to quantity of Snha dravya ,Navan Nasya is of 2 types Marsha & Pratimarsha
