Indications of nasya

Nasya ( Nasal Medication )  –

Indications of nasya:

Brinhana Nasya ( Nourishing) – Indications – Reference – Ashtang Hrudaya Sutrasthana 20/4

1.  Indicated in vataja or vata predominant diseases like-migraine( Sooryavarta)
2.  Hemicrania (Ardhavabedhaka)
3.  Constriction of the eyes ( Akshi sankocha)
4.  Tremors of the eyes ( Akshi spandana)
5.  Defects of the vision(Timira)
6.  Difficulty in getting up from sleep (krichr avabobhaka)
7.  Toothache(Danta shoola)
8.  Earache(karna shoola)
9.  Tinnitus (karna nada)

10.              Dryness of nose and the oral cavity( Nasa mukha shosha)
11.              Difficulty in speech(Vak sanga)
12.              Hoarseness of voice(Swaropa ghata)
13.              Diseases of neck region(Manya roga) ---  pain, cervical spondylosis
14.              Frozen shoulder(Avabahuka)
15.              Insomnia (Nidra naasha).

Virechana Nasya ( Shodhan or Purifying Nasya) ---  Indications -- Reference – Ashtang Hrudaya Sutrasthana 20/3

1.  Heaviness of the head(Adhi gaurava)
2.  Swelling or tumor in the head (Shopha)
3.  Feeling as if something sticking on the head (Upalepa)
4.  Itching (kandu)
5.  Stiffness (Stambha)
6.  Conjunctivitis(Abhishyanda)
7.  Excess secretions (srava)
8.  Excess salivation= Ptyalism (praseka)
9.  Anorexia (Aasyavairasya)

10.              Loss of taste (Arochaka)
11.              Hoarseness of the voice (swara bheda)
12.              Worm infestation in the head (krimi)
13.              Coryza (pratishyaya)
14.              Epilepsy (Apasmara)


Shamana Nasya ( Pacifying ) – Indications – Referance -- Ashtang Hrudaya Sutrasthana 20/4

1.  Indicated in diseases due to the vitiation of Blood and Pitta ( Raktaja and Pittaja) like premature wrinkles on face (Akaala vali)
2.  premature graying of hairs (Palita)
3.  Hair fall ( khalitya)
4.  Psoriasis dandruff of the scalp (Daarunaka)
5.  Redness of the eyes (Raktaraaji)
6.  Blackish discoloration on face  (Vyanga)
7.  Neelika
8.  Bleeding from nose = Epistaxis ( Urdhwagata Raktapitta)

Navana Nasya --- This is Sneha Nasya .Only Sneha or medicated sneha is used .
Vacha tail will be for Shodhan or Virechan Nasya .
Anu Tail will be used for Shaman Nasya .
 Bala Tail will be used for Bruhan Nasya

Which Navan Nasya does Bruhan or Nourishment ,that type is called Nasya ,by Sushrut .Referance Sushrut Chikitsa Sthana 40/18 .Sushrut said Sneha Nasya is given to strengthen the parts like neck,shoulder & chest .

Charak – Types of Nasya ( Referance –Charak Siddhi Sthana  9/90 to 93) --- 1) Navan 2) Avapidak 3) Dhampan 4) Dhuma 5) Pratimarsha

As Dhumapan is done through Nose ,Charak has included Dhuma ,as a Type of Nasya ( Dhuma is  not explained by Vagbhata)

Dhooma nasya

1.  Medicated fumes are inhaled through the nasal passages and are eliminated through the oral route.

2.  Types-

1)  Prayogika –
 Can be taken daily as a part of Dinacharya                                        
2)  Snehika –
In this method we used Snigdha drugs
3)  Virechanika
In this method we use Tikshna drugs.
